The analysis of Rostock highlights opportunities and challenges for better connecting the waterfront with the city and integrating cruise tourism with the city centre. The aim is to create a two-way flow: residents heading towards the water and visitors heading towards the centre. A key measure is the transformation of the coastal road into a boulevard. The current single-purpose traffic artery will make way for a shared space featuring public transport, wide footpaths and cycle lanes, green spaces and places to linger, with a limited role for cars. The active plinth along the route encourages interaction with the water. At strategic points, ‘plug-in’ spaces function as urban balconies: public, multifunctional spots with views of the harbour. The ISPS zone and cruise facilities are integrated into the landscape as part of a chain of public spaces. The existing crane plays a key role in this: it enables flexible demarcation and is reused as a recognisable urban element. A temporary pavilion will be erected beneath the crane, serving as a transit area when ships are moored, but also as a place for socialising and activities. In this way, it remains relevant to residents. Technical infrastructure is provided at the edges, allowing the quay to function as an open urban park.
