The urban depot at Lourdeshoek is a new type of building. It is new not only because of its large-scale storage program and mix of functions, but also because of the ambition and necessity to stack a program that, except for the workspaces, is usually developed on a single floor. These conditions are particular but in no way diminish the essence of a logistical and productive building. This urban depot aims to be a sustainable, long-lasting presence. As a trimodal hub for urban distribution, it connects the infrastructure of inland shipping, cycling, and road traffic with the internal performance required for stacking and supporting workshop operations. The new urban depot for Lourdeshoek is not only a highly efficient hub in northern Ghent, but also a building that asserts itself within the city. Ghent gains an urban balcony, or hanging garden, as the final piece of a vast new park in development. The depot also creates an informal place by the water. From the terrace of the public bike-repair café, visitors overlook the logistical landscape of the harbor. Finally, the building forms part of the new harbor ring: a large warehouse among other industrial halls, with a program that plays a fundamental role in the city's metabolism.
