INNOVATIVE CITY PORT OF ANTWERP

Location: Antwerp
Client: AG Vespa

Kempeneiland-Asiadok lies at the boundary between city and port, giving it the potential to connect both worlds: the port gains a face toward the city, and the city toward the port. The site is being developed as an innovative hub that leverages its waterside and urban position to bring companies together around the Innovatiedok and encourage cross-pollination. Three stacked industrial buildings extend the block structure of the Cadix district. This built strip forms a clearly legible whole: to the east, a wide quay supports logistical movements and innovative experiments on the water, while to the west, a public green axis is reserved for soft mobility. This public connection links Kempeneiland with the other islands through the park at the island’s tip and a series of new bridges. At this park, a workshop tower acts as a new landmark toward IJzerlaan and the port. Collective facilities around the park make this public space the heart of the city-port. Typological research into the stacked industrial spaces focuses on logistical flows, sustainability, the public-facing character of economic activity, and economic feasibility. The project’s innovative ambition extends across all scales: from new mobility modes and urban business typologies to experiments on the dock floor and cooling the buildings with dock water.
