The Vander Putten Stadium site is currently hidden behind a wall and the Arts et Métiers school, but it has the potential to become an important sports link along the canal. Located in the busy Ninoofsepoort area—a key junction between Anderlecht, Molenbeek and central Brussels—the site can connect to a network of public spaces centered around Ninoofsepoort Park, with smaller parks acting as entrances.
The project proposes a diverse and ambitious program combining sports infrastructure with 120 housing units. Their placement creates a triangular central square linking the site to the park. A compact building volume allows for a large, high-quality green sports area. The ground floor sports hall activates the site, while its large span creates visual connections between green spaces, making sports visible in the surrounding area.
Due to a shortage of sports facilities in Brussels, the design introduces a flexible and expandable structure. In a minimal version, existing halls are adapted; in more ambitious versions, multiple halls can be stacked. The system follows a modular ABABA rhythm, organizing both large and supporting spaces efficiently. Outdoor sports fields can also be placed on the roof, strengthening the site as a multifunctional sports hub.
