SPORTS CENTER PUNARU'U

The Punaruu stadium stands at the end of a green valley, cut off by a ring road and bordering a small industrial zone. The site is fragmented by asphalt parking areas, scattered outbuildings, and containers. The park design organizes parking at the edges, frames the sports halls with a green buffer, and integrates the existing trees into shaded walkways. By placing the new martial arts center against the blind facade of the stadium and stacking the sports halls, the project densifies activity and strengthens the open spaces between. The martial arts center brings together four halls: dojo, boxing, MMA, and fitness/weightlifting. The client wants to give structure and recognition to the informal and sometimes illegal practice of combat sports in Tahiti. A compact arrangement of the four multipurpose halls, with a light-filled facade of polycarbonate and glass, is placed near the existing stands. The halls can be used separately without central management. In the intermediate space, the circulation of both buildings is linked, creating a dynamic interplay of stairs and stands. The blank stadium facade is opened up, allowing light and views under the stands. Large accordion doors allow the building to open or close completely. The valley views and green spaces become part of the sports experience. The natural breeze cools the building, reducing the need for energy-intensive air conditioning and allowing outdoor use whenever possible.
