Urban and Social Context: The Keerdok swimming area is conceived as a "masterplan on the water," aligned with the Keerdok and Binnendijle Masterplans. Developed with local residents and community organizations, it is based on four principles: respect, willingness to stay, accessibility, and communication and awareness. Its flexible design allows it to adapt to future urban needs. Program Modularity and Versatility: Defined by floating pontoons, the swimming area can be easily adapted or expanded (50 m pool, plunge zone, polar bear swims, diving tower, kayaking, yachts, ferry, sun terrace, etc.). A larger open swimming zone preserves the quay's character. A fixed pontoon extends the public space, providing a place to relax, while a gentle slope leads to a shallow acclimatization area. Management and Safety: Two operating modes are provided: supervised access with reservations or free public access. Signage and automated systems inform visitors about water quality, safety, and personal responsibility. Sustainability: The project prioritizes the reuse of infrastructure, ecological materials, and biodiversity-enhancing measures such as water-purifying plants, fountains, and floating green islands. Its reversible design improves water quality and urban livability. Keerdok Mechelen will become the first open urban swimming area to showcase the value and potential of clean water in the city.
