RESIDENCE GISTEL

Location: Gistel
Client: Private

The rectangular and flat parcel is located in an allotment. On one side the plot borders a polder landscape with windmills in the distance and the Oostende-Veurne motorway on the horizon. The concept of the house consists of four parallel walls, between which the spaces are generated. The walls appear, through linear concrete strips embedded in the gravel garden, to have been slided out of the landscape, into the site. Two glass surfaces cut through the walls at the front and rear facade. Landscape and living space flow into each other. The living space develops between two walls. With a length of 23 m, a height of 7,20 m and a width of 5 m, it has museum-like proportions. In this double-height space, hang two floor slabs, on which the library and the bedroom are located. In the middle of this space, a sculptural concrete surface is thirteen meters wide and floats a few centimeters above the floor of the library. Zenithal light illuminates the wall. The interplay of concrete surfaces, incoming daylight and spatial relations results in a kaleidoscopic space that connects the library, bedroom and living space with diagonal views and offers residents a prominent view of the ubiquitous landscape. On the west side of the building, the utilitarian functions on the ground floor and first floor merge into one utilitarian block.
