RESIDENCE DE HAAN
Location: De Haan
Client: Private
Between the historical heritage of the Concessiewijk in De Haan, to the plan by J. Stübben from 1912, lies a peculiar plot that on one side opens up to a vast dune landscape, while on the other side it is overshadowed by the presence of a tall apartment building, leading to a significant lack of privacy. To integrate these contrasts in the surroundings, the house is conceptualized as a 'dune house'. By folding a rectangular volume and embedding it at the edge of the site, an introverted V-shaped plan is created, with the ends dug into the dune. With this strategic placement of the compact volume, the garden is maximally preserved, while the original dune topography is restored and reinforced. Inside the house, a functional yet serene layout emerges. On the interior side, the stairwell and night corridor overlook a patio against the dune. In the northern wing, the office space, bedrooms, and garage are oriented inward. The south-facing wing on the other hand opens fully to the dune landscape, allowing the living spaces to enjoy wide views and maximum sunlight. Warm wooden materials and the rhythm of the architecture and proportions of the inner facade contribute to an intimate, inward-facing atmosphere. In contrast, the use of more robust, stone-like materials and the larger proportions of the dynamic, curved facade emphasize the extroverted connection with the landscape and surroundings.
